The 25 Top Yielding Dividend Stocks

Dividend investing is popular again. Investors have taken to heart Jeremy Siegel's studies, which show that higher-yielding stocks tend to offer greater returns over time than low- or no-yield stocks.

The top-paying dividend stocks can be very tantalizing. So long as a stock yielding 15% doesn't lose value, you'll make 15% in one year! In more cases than not, however, an astronomical yield is a bad sign for a stock. Since dividend yields and stock prices move in opposite directions, a high yield usually means investors have begun to worry about the business and driven down its stock price.

However, certain types of companies, such as REITs, have to pay out most of their income as dividends, so their yields will be higher than "normal." Dividends are not guaranteed; you need to make sure that a business is generating enough cash to pay its dividend, or your investment could be disastrous.

I ran a screen for the highest-paying regular dividend stocks; the only limitations I've set this time is that the dividend stocks must have a market cap greater than $500 million, must be primarily listed in the U.S. (no American depositary receipts), and must be corporations (no REITs , BDCs , LPs, MLPs, or LLCs).

Note that these stocks are a good place to start your research, but they're not formal recommendations.

I covered Windstream in October. Nothing has changed about the company's debt situation. As I wrote then, "Investing in Windstream looks like picking up quarters in front of a steamroller; sooner or later you're going to get crushed." I would still pass on the stock.

I covered Ship Finance International last month and concluded:

Warren Buffett has made billions jumping over one-foot hurdles. Ship Finance International is certainly not a one-foot hurdle. There are easier-to-understand businesses out there [for which] you can wrap your head around the margin of safety, or lack thereof. I'd pass.

Vector Group has an interesting assortment of assets that I covered in June, including the fourth-largest cigarette manufacturer, multiple real estate holdings, and a 50% stake in the largest residential real estate broker in New York. The company pays out well over 100% of its free cash flow by issuing debt and convertible debt. I'd pass on the company and look instead at Lorillard or my perennial favorite and longtime holding Phillip Morris International.

Foolish bottom line
Remember, these seemingly irresistible yields could be ticking time bombs, so do your own due diligence. Also make sure you diversify your picks across various sectors. As investors relearn every decade or so, you never want to put all your eggs in one basket -- no matter how tempting the dividends are.

Nothing gets between Americans and pro football.

It's a lesson learned the hard way by Time Warner Cable as it blinked in its negotiations over licensing fees with CBS on the eve of the NFL regular season debut in September.

If the costly fight — TWC lost 306,000 customers during the third quarter — proved anything this year, it was that owners of compelling content can often steer their destinies even as emerging technologies upend distribution and sales tactics.

Despite tirades about bountiful junk on the Internet and cable and the decline of the legacy media business, investors' money flowed to the producers of TV shows and websites. Even magazines and newspapers got some good news in 2013.

U.S. media and entertainment companies completed $75.8 billion worth of acquisitions and mergers this year, a 47% increase on 2012, according to Thomson Reuters. The number of deals was up, as well — 766, vs. 596 a year ago.

Of course, the relatively stable economy helped spur dealmakers' appetites, and the cheap borrowing environment — not to mention some bargain-basement prices — made more capital available to conduct deals. But various signs indicate that the bet on media is driven by more than broader economic forces.

Some investors found valuation of the target companies ideal as the recovery of the advertising market from the 2008 financial crisis teeters along. Total U.S. advertising spending rose for the fourth-consecutive year in 2013, up 3.8% to $171.3 billion, according to data from eMarketer. A sharp spike in mobile advertising and a steady recovery of TV ads more than offset the continual — and likely, irrevocable — fall in print advertising.

Other deals were the manifestations of companies seeking consolidation — aligning resources with competitors — to fortify themselves against foes and forces tha! t threaten future profits. "Consolidation is happening in every legacy industry," wrote media analyst Ken Doctor, on his website, Newsonomics.com. "2013 was the biggest year of TV station ownership consolidation."

MORE AD MONEY

Even with the talk of appointment TV watching becoming a bit passé, TV producers and broadcasters saw an uptick in ad spending in 2013. But for an industry accustomed to double-digit growth rates, the 2.8% increase in TV ad spending in 2013 — to $66.35 billion — was hardly encouraging. That was a noticeable slowdown from 2012, when TV ad spending grew 6.4%, eMarketer says.

"It's increasing, but at a very slow rate," says Clark Fredricksen, eMarketer's vice president of communications. "Ad-supported TV viewing options are becoming potentially more fragmented and limited."

One area seemingly immune from emerging technology is live sports. Media companies lucky enough to have skin in that game posted encouraging results and pursued expansion efforts this year.

The cable division at Disney, which includes ESPN, posted $1.3 billion in operating income in its most recent quarter, more than half the company total. To compete with the behemoth of Bristol, Conn., Fox launched its own sports channel in 2013, Fox Sports 1.

So it was only fitting that sports would play a significant role in ending the TV industry's fight of the year. With the NFL regular season set to start in three days, on Sept. 2, CBS reached a new broadcasting rights agreement with Time Warner Cable, ending a month-long blackout of the network's shows in several key markets. The two companies had been negotiating for a new retransmission contract, which spells out the amount of money TWC pays CBS for the rights to carry CBS-owned TV stations.

Analysts had predicted that the companies would strike an 11th-hour agreement to avert a blackout spilling into the the NFL regular season and losing lucrative advertising revenue. CBS, citing the popularity of its TV shows, sought high! er fees a! nd the right to sell its content to other digital distributors; the network declared victory.

Broadcasters increasingly rely on retransmission fees to make up for sluggish ad revenue. That helped spur deals in other ways this year. Major broadcasters — including Gannett (parent of USA TODAY), Tribune Co., Sinclair and Nexstar Broadcasting — bought more stations, partly in hopes of gaining greater leverage against cable and satellite TV companies at the negotiating table.

Retransmission fees collected by TV station owners rose 38.5% to $3.3 billion this year, according to research firm SNL Kagan. That total is expected to more than double to $7.6 billion by 2019.

Pay-TV companies are also eyeing consolidation, as more customers decide to go without premium TV and rely on video streaming. The trend of "cord-cutting" grew unabated this year, with about 17% of consumers cutting or reducing pay-TV services in the third quarter, according to Digitalsmiths, a video search and recommendation company. That's up from 14% and 13.4% in the second and first quarter, respectively.

Comcast, the largest cable company in the U.S., has had talks with Time Warner Cable about the possibility of merging. Charter Communications is also pursuing a possible deal with TWC in pursuit of a larger portfolio of TV and Internet customers that would give it more clout with cable and TV networks.

PRINT PROBLEMS

The relatively stable economic outlook didn't spill over into the print ad market. Print publishers — while heartened that the rate of decline has eased — continue to be confounded by what seems like an irreversible slide. Newspaper ad spending fell 6.1% in 2013 to $17.8 billion, while magazine ads were relatively flat. That's a slight improvement for newspapers from an 8.4% decline in 2012.

Earlier this year, Newsonomics' Doctor predicted that 2013 would prove to be the year of the great digital "crossover" for legacy media companies — a sober embrace of online distribu! tion coup! led with a stepped-up effort to find new revenue sources. The transformation was rough for many, as the year proved that digital ads — at least, without innovation — have a limited upside.

Overall digital ad spending grew 15.7% to $42.6 billion, but that was largely due to mobile ads that more than doubled this year, eMarketer says.

Ad spending on sites delivered via desktop and laptop computers remained flat at about $33 billion this year. Automated ad sales through online ad exchanges helped drive down ad prices. Even as large corporate customers are more comfortable advertising online, they may be increasingly steering clear of click-to-buy banner ads.

Instead, publishers have prominently turned to "sponsored content" and "native ads" — ads tailored to advertisers' wishes and displayed more seamlessly with other content — to replace the slide in more traditional online ads.

At the same time, more evidence surfaced to show that publishers are looking to lessen their dependence on advertising. More publishers are erecting paywalls, charging readers to access their content online. More than 40% of U.S. newspapers will have one in place by mid-2014, Doctor predicts. The New York Times Co., whose moves in the digital realm are carefully monitored, generated more circulation revenue — thanks largely to its metered digital paywall — than advertising sales for the first time in its history. In its most recent quarter, the number of digital subscribers rose 29% from a year ago to 727,000.

The occasional hints that readers and advertisers will pay for quality content — coupled with attractive pricing — may have driven several big names to buy newspapers this year. Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos' $250 million acquisition of The Washington Post and a $70 million deal by Boston Red Sox owner John Henry to buy The Boston Globe are among the most prominent examples. And superstar financier Warren Buffett also added to his newspaper portfolio this year.

Xylem Gains as Profits Flow Like Water

Xylem (XYL) makes products for water collection and distribution. Xymox was a goth band from the Netherlands. What do they have in common, besides an X and a y at the beginning of their names? They demonstrate that anyone can be underestimated.

For Xymox, that came when their song “Imagination” off their third album hit the Billboard Hot 100. For Xylem, it might just be today, as its shares have jumped 13% to $32.45 following its surprisingly good earnings. Bloomberg has the details:

Xylem's third-quarter earnings per share of 49 cents, excluding some items, topped the 35-cent estimate…Xylem raised its 2013 adjusted earnings per share forecast to $1.60 to $1.65 from $1.40 to $1.50. Analysts projected $1.37 on average.

Wedbush’s David Rose calls noted Xylem’s “impressive margin recovery.” He writes:

Operating margins before charges were 13.5% vs. 12.9% in the year-ago period and 380 bps above our estimate. Following a disappointing Q2 with substantially lowered guidance, XYL managed to see an impressive reversal in margin trends for its Water Infrastructure business, which experienced 15.5% adjusted operating margins versus our estimate for 11.8%. Margins for Applied Water were down YOY and below our estimate. Adjusted operating margins exclude special charges and realignment costs.

Last year, the Kansas City Chiefs were the worst team in the NFL, winning just two games and scoring an average of 13 points per game. This year, after hiring long-time Eagles coach Andy Reid, the Chiefs are one of only two undefeated teams and appear on their way to at least a long playoff run, if not the Super Bowl.

Most teams with bad years tend to require a number of years to improve (if they improve at all, that is). If the Chiefs continue their improbable success, they could become one of those rare franchises that bounces back straight to the top — appearing in the Super Bowl. Looking through the history of the modern Super Bowl era, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the eight teams that managed to come back from a losing season to make it all the way to the Super Bowl.

Sometimes, a disappointing season can actually improve a team's chances of making the Super Bowl. A terrible year, or years, can often lead management to clean house, firing coaches and making trades. In 2002, the Carolina Panthers fired George Seifert after an abysmal 1-15 season. His replacement, John Fox, ended up leading the team on a Super Bowl run two seasons later.

A bad year can also boost a team's chances in the form of new star players. Fans know this because the worst teams are allowed to pick earlier in the draft after a season concludes. So, the 15-loss Panthers were allowed to select second overall. They used this pick to draft future star defensive end Julius Peppers, who became a major part of the following year's Super Bowl team.

The San Francisco 49ers' poor 1980 season allowed them to draft Hall of Fame defensive back Ronnie Lott eighth overall. Lott then helped the San Francisco make and win the Super Bowl the following year.

For some of these comeback teams, the Super Bowl run was just the first sign of years of success. Going into the 1999 season, the St. Louis Rams had not had a winning season in nearly a decade. That team, which became known as the "greatest show on turf" for its high-powered offense, won the Super Bowl that year, played in another two years later, and made the playoffs in four of the next five seasons.

On the other hand, there are comeback teams on this list that ended up being flashes in the pan. The 1998 Atlanta Falcons came back from two losing seasons to go 14-2 and lose Super Bowl XXXIII. Instead of riding on that success, the team then missed the playoffs in each of the next three years.

Government Shutdown Could Derail Holiday Retail Sales

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Retailers are "cautiously optimistic" about "solid" holiday sales this year, an industry trade group said Thursday, but ongoing fiscal concerns and the U.S. government shutdown could derail expectations.

Holiday retail sales this year are expected to rise marginally over 2012. According to the National Retail Federation, sales in the months of November and December will rise 3.9% to $602.1 billion, slightly ahead of 2012's actual holiday season sales growth of 3.5%. The forecast is higher than the 10-year average holiday sales growth of 3.3%, NRF said in a release Thursday.

"Our forecast is a realistic look at where we are right now in this economy -- balancing continued uncertainty in Washington and an economy that has been teetering on incremental growth for years," NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said in a press release. "Overall, retailers are optimistic for the 2013 holiday season, hoping political debates over government spending and the debt ceiling do not erase any economic progress we've already made."

On the one hand, positive growth from the U.S. housing market as well as consumers' appetite to buy larger-ticket items gives "retailers reason to be cautiously optimistic for solid holiday season gains," the release said. Another bright spot in the holiday sales forecast -- online sales continue to surpass expectations. Shop.org, the NRF's digital retail division, predicts online sales this season to rise to $82 billion, which is between 13% and 15% higher than 2012. But if the back-to-school season is any measurement, retailers could be disappointed. Companies from Wal-Mart (WMT) to Target (TGT) have lowered guidance this year following soft summer sales and concerns about the consumer. According to NRF, the holiday season can account for anywhere from 20% to 40% of a retailer's annual sales, and accounts for approximately 20% of total industry annual sales. In addition, fiscal concerns around the debt ceiling and government funding, income growth and even policies and actions surrounding foreign affairs, could impact holiday sales, the NRF said. On top of wary consumers, the length of the recent government shutdown could throw another wrench into the forecast.

"The economy continues to expand, albeit at an unspectacular pace," NRF's Chief Economist Jack Kleinhenz said. "In order for consumers to turn out this holiday season, we need to see steady improvements in income and job growth, as well as an agreement from Washington that puts the economic recovery first. Our forecast leaves room for improvement, while at the same time provides a very realistic look at the state of the American consumer and their confidence in our economy."

Retailers are expected to hire between 720,000 and 780,000 seasonal workers this holiday season, in line with the actual 720,500 they hired in 2012, which was 13% above 2011.

Last week, Deloitte forecast retail sales to rise 4% to 4.5% to a range of $963 billion to $967 billion from November through January. on par with last year's 4.5% gain. Retail sales between November 2012 and January 2013 (excluding autos and gasoline) totaled $925 billion, Deloitte said, citing the U.S. Commerce Department.

Deloitte also forecast double-digit increases in non-store sales of 12.5% to 13%, with mobile-influenced retail sales to rise 8% to $66 billion. Consumers are "researching their purchases electronically -- via their PC, tablet or mobile phone -- are increasingly influencing in-store sales, particularly as we see greater integration across retailers' store, online and mobile channels," said Alison Paul, Deloitte's vice chairman and retail & distribution sector leader. "More retailers are offering services such as 'buy online and pick up in store,' as well as inventory from other locations and price matching on the spot. The store is still a core element of holiday shopping and retailers leading the way this season will be those that effectively bring together their pricing, promotions, merchandise and inventory management across both their physical and digital storefronts," Paul said last week. -- Written by Laurie Kulikowski in New York. The pharmacy chain will join 17 other large employers on the Aon Hewitt Corporate Health Exchange as part of a growing movement to offer employees fixed dollar amounts to purchase their own plans on such exchanges. The end-cost to employees depends on the plan chosen, but they typically get more options than under traditional arrangements. Private exchanges mimic the coverage mandated as part of the Affordable Care Act. Enrollment in the public exchanges starts Oct. 1. "What happens to employer contributions over time? Will they put in as much as they put in the past? These are unanswered questions but potential negatives," says Paul Fronstin, a senior research associate with the Employee Benefit Research Institute. The benefit to Walgreen and other employers is unknown at this point, as their cost-savings aren't clear. Of the 180,000 Walgreen (WAG) employees eligible for health care insurance, 120,000 opted for coverage for themselves and 40,000 family members. Another 60,000 employees, many of them working part-time, weren't eligible for health insurance. Aon Hewitt (AON) says other participants in its program include retailer Sears Holding (SHLD) and Darden Restaurants (DRI). These new additions raise enrollment to 330,000 from 100,000 last year, and Aon Hewitt estimates enrollment will jump to 600,000 next year, a fivefold increase from 2012. First Solar Drags Down Solar Stocks

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR  ) dropped as much as 10% today, dragging the rest of the industry down with it. SolarCity (NASDAQ: SCTY  ) dropped as much as 11% and SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR  ) fell 7% in early trading.

So what: The driver today was First Solar's first-quarter earnings, which came in slightly lower than estimates. Revenue of $755 million beat the $725 million estimate, but earnings of $0.69 per share was $0.06 short of estimates.

Now what: The reaction by investors is puzzling to say the least. First Solar reiterated full-year guidance for 2013, which excited Wall Street just a month ago. It's also difficult to draw conclusions from a single quarter because First Solar gets most of its revenue from selling systems, which results in lumpy quarterly results. 

As for SolarCity and SunPower, they're dropping just because First Solar "missed" earnings by a fraction. I think the move is overdone for all solar stocks and investors will return to sanity and start seeing value in the sector in coming months. These are three of the best stocks in solar and the industry is just entering its growth phase.

Hot Gold Stocks To Watch For 2014

For the last week, all has been forgotten about the most popular reasons as to why gold is going to begin to rally to infinity and beyond. The old arguments that gold is about to go parabolic based upon the resurrection of "troubles in the Eurozone," massive amount of easing being engaged in by the Asians, or whatever was presented as the reason-of-the-week are now completely forgotten.

Now, we see articles that are calling for the death of the gold bull and the death of inflation, and others are pointing to the fact that gold is not money. Everyone, other than the perma-bulls, have become very negative about gold.

As for our long-time gold bulls, they are all enraged by this decline. Prior to this decline, you would hear them walking down the halls muttering about their conspiracy theories. Now, their heads are exploding. They have called the final bottom in this market more times than Dennis Gartman has changed positions on gold in the last two years. Some have even thrown in the towel.

Golden Star Resources Ltd., a gold mining and exploration company, through its subsidiaries, engages in the acquisition, exploration, development, and production of gold properties.     Why Have Gurus Lost Faith in Golden Star?

    Despite aggressive expansion over the past decade, the Toronto-based gold mining firm has not been able to take advantage of its increased production output. Gold prices might have exploded over a ten-year period, yet the recent six-month decline has put a huge strain on Golden Star. The expedited maturation of its mines is particularly troubling, since the accelerated extraction rates, which allowed for short-term profits, are now falling considerably. The impact of the company�� excessive overproduction on profits and growth is clear: decreasing gold reserves mean less production, and thus reduced revenue for the gold miner. When the decline in metal prices are taken into account, the outlook is even more grim.

    In addition to overexpansion at the wrong time, Golden Star�� position has weakened due to its comparably less efficient operations. Unlike industry peers, such as IamGold Corp. (IAG) or Gold Fields Ltd. (GFI), the majority of the Toronto-based miner�� assets contain refractory ore, which is far more expensive to extract than non refractory ore. And, in an attempt to switch production to the lower cost gold ore, and thus increase margins, Golden Star has depleted its mines��non refractory ore. With low reserves and mounting cash costs, the firm inevitably turned to new acquisitions.

    When bears are raging on the gold bullion market, it's not surprising to see gold stocks getting mauled as well. Golden Star Resources (NYSEMKT: GSS  ) was the biggest loser in the sector, losing a quarter of its market cap on no company-specific news, though a report last Friday indicated that a large number of hedge funds had recently dumped their positions in the mid-tier miner. Yet it wasn't all that much better among the majors, either, as Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX  ) fell almost 13% and Kinross Gold (NYSE: KGC  ) was down 14%.

    It's simple physics: The bigger they are, the harder they fall. When gold prices nosedived earlier this week, gold miners with historically higher operating costs took the brunt of the hit. For the most part, that meant that development-stage miners, and those operating in Africa, where labor and political costs make cost-effective mining a challenge, took it on the chin. Possibly no stock was hammered more than Golden Star Resources, a gold miner in Ghana, which lost about one-quarter of its value on Monday alone.

    CME Group Inc (CME) reported on Wednesday that September volume average increased 10% from September 2012, while its third quarter volume average grew 11% from last year.

    For September, volume averaged 13.1 million contracts per day, totaling 261 million for the month. Equity index volume in September averaged 2.9 million contracts per day, a 4% increase from last year. Equity index options volume was up 52% in September.

    Third quarter volume average was 12 million per day, up 11% from a year ago.

    CME Group shares were mostly flat during pre-market trading Wednesday. The stock is up 48% YTD.

    One financial market player that's starting to move within range of triggering a major breakout trade is CME Group (CME), which offers products across all major asset classes based on interest rates, equity indexes, foreign exchange, energy, agricultural commodities, metals, weather and real estate. This stock has been in play with the bulls so far in 2013, with shares up sharply by 48%.

    If you take a look at the chart for CME Group, you'll notice that this stock recently formed a triple bottom chart pattern at $70.42, to $69.88 and $70.28 a share. Following that bottom, shares of CME have now started to trend back above its 50-day moving average of $72.70 a share. That move is quickly pushing CME within range of triggering a major breakout trade.

    Traders should now look for long-biased trades in CME if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $75.50 to $77.65 a share and then once it clears its 52-week high at $79.45 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 1.84 million shares. If that breakout hits soon, then CME will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory above $79.45, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $90 to $100 a share.

    Traders can look to buy CME off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day at $72.70 a share or just below more support at $70 a share. One can also buy CME off strength once it takes out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

    It is no secret that precious metals companies have been taking a pounding for some time now. The SPDR Gold Trust (NYSEMKT: GLD  ) and iShares Silver Trust (NYSEMKT: SLV  ) , the gold and silver ETFs, have been hard hit and operating companies like First Majestic (NYSE: AG  ) and Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX  ) have been hit even harder.     Despite the weakness seen in precious metals a few weeks ago, silver has been relatively stable ever since mid-April, with the iShares Silver Trust (NYSEMKT: SLV  ) trading in a dollar-wide range ever since. With the presidents of the Chicago and Philadelphia Federal Reserve banks��releasing conflicting statements, turmoil may be just around the corner. Miners like Pan American (NASDAQ: PAAS  ) and First Majestic (NYSE: AG  ) are still facing operating challenges, while silver streaming darling Silver Wheaton (NYSE: SLW  ) struggles as well.

    In terms of individual companies, there are several good choices, but these can behave very differently. Pan American Silver (NASDAQ: PAAS  ) , for example, missed revenue expectations and beat earnings expectations in its last earnings release. But despite the beat, EPS shrank considerably from a year earlier on a GAAP basis. The stock has been fairly flat ever since. Conversely, First Majestic (NYSE: AG  ) reported strong revenue growth and a small bump in profits, sending the stock higher since the announcement. First Majestic reported increased cash costs and tightening margins, largely driven by lower silver prices. Each of these companies faces pressure from increasing production costs and environmental concerns.
