DigitalGlobe, Inc. Earnings: Finally Time to Focus on Growth

DigitalGlobe  (NYSE: DGI  ) just released mixed third-quarter results, and the market is responding by pushing shares down around 3% in Thursday's after-hours trading. But that doesn't mean the satellite image purveyor's results were bad.

DigitalGlobe's quarterly revenue fell 6.2% year over year, to $154.6 million, which translated to a narrower net loss of $0.1 million. That's essentially breakeven on a per-share basis, thanks, in part, to DigitalGlobe's repurchase of nearly 496,000 shares of stock for roughly $15 million during the quarter. Analysts, on average, were expecting DigitalGlobe to turn in a $0.01 per share loss on slightly higher sales of $155.2 million.

Worldview-3 is officially up and running
Perhaps most importantly, the highlight of DigitalGlobe's third quarter was the successful August 13, 2014 launch of its WorldView-3 satellite, which is capable of collecting images of Earth at a stunning resolution of 0.31m. According to DigitalGlobe, that makes it "the world's highest resolution and most capable commercial earth observation satellite."

Better yet, calibrations for WorldView-3 were completed on Oct. 1, 2014, which enabled the company to begin providing visible spectrum imagery to its customers. As a result, that same day, DigitalGlobe was also able to begin recognizing revenue from its EnhancedView Service Level Agreement with the NGA at a new annualized rate of $337 million -- an increase of $50 million per year.

GeoEye fully integrated; WorldView-4 on its way
DigitalGlobe also finally wrapped up its 18-month integration of GeoEye this quarter, which enabled it to fully realize it's $120 million synergy target. Even as of last quarter's blurry report, the merger of the two companies had already created a de facto monopoly, and yielded more than $115 million in annual operating cost synergies.

In addition, DigitalGlobe CEO Jeffrey Tarr says the company completed pre-storage construction on its next-gen WorldView-4 satellite, which will be capable of collecting even sharper 30 centimeter resolution images. For perspective, in late July, DigitalGlobe announced plans to accelerate the launch of WorldView-4 to mid-2016.

Tarr said at the time the move was made in response to the U.S. Government's decision to allow DigitalGlobe to sell its highest-quality imagery to commercial clients. According to then-CFO Yancey Spruill, that opened up a potential $400 million-per-year global addressable market, which is currently being dominated by high-res offerings from aerial surveyors.

On guidance
Finally, DigitalGlobe raised the bottom-end of its previous full-year 2014 guidance by $10 million, resulting in a new guidance range of $640 million to $660 million. By contrast, analysts were only modeling full-year 2014 revenue of $644.8 million.

Best Sliver Companies To Watch In Right Now

At the same time, however, DigitalGlobe now expects capital expenditures to be around $185 million for the year, representing an increase of $15 million over its guidance provided three months ago. To its credit, DigitalGlobe explained that CapEx increase stems from a reduction in year-end payables related to satellite construction projects. It also still sees full-year adjusted EBITDA margin of roughly 43%, with Q4 adjusted EBITDA margin of roughly 50% at the mid-point of its new revenue guidance.

Despite what the market's reaction might indicate given DigitalGlobe's small top-line miss, I think this was a solid report that should leave investors with plenty to look forward to. DigitalGlobe has spent the better part of the last few years investing to bring disparate pieces of its long-term puzzle in place. Going forward, it appears poised to finally start enjoying the fruits of those investments.

Top 10 Restaurant Companies To Invest In Right Now: Arcos Dorados Holdings Inc (ARCO)

Arcos Dorados Holdings Inc., incorporated on December 9, 2010, is a McDonald franchisee. As of December 31, 2010, the Company operated or franchised 1,755 McDonald-branded restaurants, which represented 6.7% of McDonald total franchised restaurants globally. It operates McDonald-branded restaurants under two different operating formats, Company-operated restaurants and franchised restaurants. As of December 31, 2010, of its 1,755 McDonald-branded restaurants in the territories, 1,292 (or 74%) were Company-operated restaurants and 463 (or 26%) were franchised restaurants. As of December 31, 2010, it owned the land for 510 of its restaurants (totaling approximately 1.2 million square meters) and the buildings for all but 12 of its restaurants. Company-Operated and Franchised Restaurants

The Company operates its McDonald-branded restaurants under two basic structures: Company-operated restaurants operated by the Company and franchised restaurants operated by franchisees. Under both operating alternatives the real estate location may ! either be owned or leased by the Company. It owns, fully manages and operates the Company-operated restaurants and retains any operating profits generated by such restaurants, after paying operating expenses and the franchise and other fees owed to McDonald under the Master Franchise Agreements (MFAs). In Company-operated restaurants, it assumes the capital expenditures for the building and equipment of the restaurant and, if it owns the real estate location, for the land as well. Under its franchise arrangements, franchisees provide a portion of the capital required by initially investing in the equipment, signs, seating and decor of their restaurants, and by reinvesting in the business over time. It is required by the MFAs to own the real estate or to secure long-term leases for franchised restaurant sites. It subsequently leases or subleases the property to franchisees.

In exchange for the lease and services, franchisees pay a monthly rent to the Company, based on the greater of a fixed rent or a certain percentage of gross sales. In addition to this monthly rent, it collects the monthly continuing franchise fee, which generally is 5% of the United States dollar equivalent of the restaurant gross sales, and pays these fees to McDonald pursuant to the MFAs. However, if a franchisee fails to pay its monthly continuing franchise fee, it remains liable for payment in full of these fees to McDonald. As of December 31, 2010, it was engaged in several joint ventures, which collectively owned 24 restaurants, in Argentina, Chile and Colombia.

Restaurant Categories

The Company classifies its restaurants into one of four categories: freestanding, food court, in-store and mall stores. Freestanding restaurants are the type of restaurant, which have ample indoor seating and include a drive-through area. Food court restaurants are located in malls and consist of a front counter and kitchen and do not have their own seating area. In-store restaurants are part ! of a larg! er building and resemble freestanding restaurants, except for the lack of a drive-through area. Mall stores are located in malls like food court restaurants, but have their own seating areas. As of December 31, 2010, 808 (or 46.2%) of its restaurants were freestanding, 359 (or 20.5%) were food court, 265 (or 15.1%) were in-stores and 319 (or 18.2%) were mall stores. In addition, it has four non-traditional stores, such as food carts.

Arcos Dorados (ARCO) operates and franchises McDonald's restaurants in Latin America. This stock closed up 7.7% to $13.33 in Wednesday's trading session.

    Wednesday's Volume: 3.81 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 856,761

    Volume % Change: 333%

From a technical perspective, ARCO soared higher here back above both its 50-day moving average at $12.31 and its 200-day moving average at $12.86 with heavy upside volume. This move has now taken shares of ARCO out of its downtrend and the stock closed strong near the highs of the day. Shares of ARCO are now moving within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if ARCO manages to take out its intraday high of $13.42 and then once it clears more resistance at $14.35 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ARCO as long as it's trending above its 200-day at $12.86 or its 50-day at $12.31 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 856,761 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then ARCO will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $15.52 to its 52-week high at $16. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give ARCO a chance to tag $18 to $19.

Another under-$10 stock that looks poised for a sharp move higher is Dolan (DM), a provider of necessary business information and professional services to the legal, financial and real estate sectors in the U.S. This stock has been hammered by the sellers so far in 2013, with shares off huge by 80%.

If you take a look at the chart for Dolan Company, you'll notice that this stock has been downtrending badly over the last two months, with shares plunging lower from its high of $3 a share to its recent low of 66 cents per share. During that downtrend, shares of DM have been consistently making lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of DM into oversold territory, since its current relative strength index reading is 20. Oversold can always get more oversold, but it's also an area where a stock can make a powerful bounce higher from.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in DM if it manages to break out above Thursday's high of 77 cents per share and then above some more near-term overhead resistance at 80 cents per share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 321,823 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then DM will set up for a possible powerful bounce higher that could easily take this stock back above $1 to $1.20 a share.

Traders can look to buy DM off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right around some key near-term support levels at 71 cents to 66 cents per share. One can also buy DM off strength once it starts to clear those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

So which of these stocks might make traders some profits in the short term and investors some profits over the longer term? Here is a closer look to help you decide:

    Leading and Lagging Sectors
Tuesday morning, the energy sector proved to be a source of strength for the market. Leading the sector was strength from Forest Oil (NYSE: FST) and Swift Energy Co (NYSE: SFY). Financial shares declined around 0.60 percent in Tuesday's trading.

  • [By Robert Rapier]

Q: Could you offer any insight/comment on Swift Energy, which seems to be moving towards oil from natgas?

Swift Energy (NYSE: SFY) is an oil and gas producer with operations primarily in Texas and Louisiana. Like Halcon, the company’s share price has been battered over the past two years, down 61 percent, but unlike Halcon, Swift seemed to turn a corner in the second half of 2013. In comparing the two, Swift is in better shape financially (less leveraged and a better cash flow position) and has less downside risk. Swift has done a good job of growing both oil and gas reserves, as well as production in the Eagle Ford.

Where Are All the Good-Paying Jobs?

In a recent speech at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen discussed the issue of income and wealth inequality, noting that the past few decades have caused a rift between the have and have-nots that may be the largest in our nation's history. From 1989 to 2013, income for the top 5% of earners grew by 38%, while the rest of the population saw gains of less than 10%.

There are many reasons for this disparity in wealth, not the least of which was the economic crisis that followed the housing crash. As far as income is concerned, I think the biggest contributor to the yawning gap between rich and poor is the current state of job creation. Simply put, most of the jobs available these days are clustered toward the low end of the wage spectrum.

An ongoing problem, spurred to new heights since 2008
Yellen is right that the gap between high and low earners has been widening for decades. Since 1979, the median usual weekly earnings hasn't changed much at all, and wage stagnation means that the average pay workers take home today doesn't buy any more than it did back then.

The financial crisis decimated the job market, and expanded the chasm between the rich and the poor. A large number of high-wage jobs were lost, in addition to middle-wage jobs that paid between $14 and $21 per hour. While those job groups haven't yet recovered, low-wage jobs are coming back strong.

How strong? A study done for the U.S. Conference of Mayors this past summer noted that the jobs in higher- and middle-wage sectors where losses were greatest -- like manufacturing and construction -- yielded average annual salaries of approximately $62,000 in 2008 and 2009. By comparison, the jobs that were added to the economy by the second quarter of 2014 produced annual incomes of just over $47,000.

How can the situation still be so dire, when unemployment is down to 5.9%, and the economy generated a hearty 248,000 jobs in September? A perusal of the most recent jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics explains just where the job growth has come from so far this year.

With the exception of construction, the sectors that have added at least 230,000 jobs in 2014 have been primarily leisure and hospitality, in addition to the retail trade. These are the very segments that the National Employment Law Project reported were gaining jobs more quickly than high- and middle-wage jobs earlier this year.

After the 2001 recession, higher-wage jobs led the rebound, at 8% growth, with low-wage close behind, at 7.9%. This time, the least lucrative jobs have grown by 10.3%, compared with growth in high-wage occupations of 7.4%. Though middle-wage jobs are rebounding at a faster clip than they did in 2001, this segment also experienced the biggest losses during the Great Recession.

Unfortunately, job projection research by BLS indicates that this trend may continue through the year 2022, at least. The fastest-growing sectors -- which are predicted to make up more than half of all new jobs -- will be those that require only a high school diploma, or less. Those occupational segments encompassed almost two-thirds of all workers in 2012 -- and paid a measly median wage of $27,670 per year.

Since workers with little discretionary income are not apt to spend, save for retirement, or invest, this prediction doesn't bode well for an economy that hasn't yet recovered from the financial crisis. If the jobs picture doesn't change, perhaps it never will.

The disappointments are starting to mount for investors in OMNOVA Solutions (NYSE: OMN  ) , an emulsion polymer and specialty chemicals maker that has missed the Street's estimates in worsening fashion for three straight quarters. Its first-quarter results, released earlier this month, showed a 9% decline in total revenue from the year-ago period because of lower volumes in Europe and India, and business seasonality. However, optimistic contentions could also be made based on this same earnings report.

With a price to earnings ratio of 123.57, it is clear investors are expecting higher growth from this stock than its competitors, whose price to earnings ratio are twice as half. I think it will not take very long for the stock to appreciate in value at a much higher rate due to higher revenue, good investor and market sentiment towards the stock, and an improved real estate market.

In August 2011, the Company sold its gamma detection device line of business (the GDS Business) to Devicor Medical Products, Inc.

Lymphoseek

Navidea pipeline includes clinical-stage radiopharmaceutical agents used to identify the presence and status of disease. Lymphoseek (Kit for the Preparation of Technetium Tc99m for Injection) is a lymph node targeting agent intended for use in intraoperative lymphatic mapping (ILM) procedures and lymphoscintigraphy employed in the overall diagnostic assessment of certain solid tumor cancers. The lymph system is a component of the body immune system. The key components of the lymph system are lymph nodes-small anatomic structures that contain disease-fighting lymphocytes, filter lymph of bacteria and cancer cells, and signal infection in response to heightened levels of pathogens. In Navidea Phase III clinical studies of Lymphoseek, it detected over 99% of positive nodes identified by vital blue dye (VBD). As of December 31, 2011, Navidea, in co-operation with UC, San Diego affiliate (UCSD), completed or initiated five Phase I clinical trials, one multi-center Phase II trial and three multi-center Phase II trials inv! olving Lymphoseek. Two Phase III studies were completed in subjects with breast cancer and melanoma. During the year ended December 31, 2011, data from NEO3-09 were released, which indicated that all primary and secondary endpoints for the study were met. As of December 31, 2011, third Phase III clinical trial for Lymphoseek in subjects with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (NEO3-06) was in progress.

AZD4694

AZD4694 is a Fluorine-18 labeled precision radiopharmaceutical candidate for use in the imaging and evaluation of patients with signs or symptoms of cognitive impairment such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). It binds to beta-amyloid deposits in the brain that can then be imaged in positron emission tomography (PET) scans. Amyloid plaque pathology is a required feature of AD and the presence of amyloid pathology is a supportive feature for diagnosis of probable AD. Patients who are negative for amyloid pathology do not have AD. AZD4694 has been studied in several clinical trials. Clinical studies through Phase IIa have included more than 80 patients to date, both suspected AD patients and healthy volunteers. No significant adverse events have been observed. Results suggest that AZD4694 has the ability to image patients quickly and safely with high sensitivity.

RadioImmunoGuided Surgery

As of December 31, 2011, RIGScan had been studied in a number of clinical trials, including Phase III studies. Navidea has conducted two Phase III studies, NEO2-13 and NEO2-14, of RIGScan in patients with primary and metastatic colorectal cancer, respectively. Both studies were multi-institutional involving cancer treatment institutions in the United States, Israel, and the European Union.

Toby Talbot/AP NEW YORK -- A voluntary effort by the world's largest food and beverage companies to remove billions of calories from the products they sell in the United States to help combat the nation's obesity epidemic has far exceeded its five-year goal, according to an independent evaluation released Thursday. In May 2010, 16 of the nation's biggest food and beverage companies, from Coca-Cola (KO) to Kraft Foods Group (KRFT), pledged to remove 1 trillion calories from the U.S. marketplace by 2012 and 1.5 trillion by 2015, compared with a 2007 baseline. In fact, as of 2012 they sold 6.4 trillion fewer calories, found an analysis by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. "Reports like this, and the fact that they exceeded their commitment by fourfold, really shows that you can make progress in giving American families more healthy options," said Larry Soler, president of the Partnership for a Healthier America, a non-profit chaired by first lady Michelle Obama. The group was formed in 2010 to work with the private sector on anti-obesity strategies. At the time, critics said the Partnership relied too heavily on the good will of the industry and couldn't replace the role of tighter regulation on how food is manufactured and marketed. Such voluntary efforts by industry "are not a magic bullet," said Jeff Levi, executive director of Trust for America's Health, a non-profit policy group. "Particularly with kids, there is a role for regulation" in reducing demand for unhealthy, high-calorie fare. It isn't clear yet how the companies accomplished the dramatic calorie reduction, said UNC public health researcher Barry Popkin, who led the analysis funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the nation's largest public health philanthropy. Some of the decline may have come from the recession, as financially strapped families cut back on junk food. When the pledge was announced, companies said they would substitute lower-calorie pro

Richard Levine/Alamy Vermont-based ice cream maker Ben & Jerry's has decided to keep the name of its new ice cream flavor, Hazed & Confused, according to Bloomberg. The company had considered a change in response to the complaint of a couple whose son, Harrison Kowiak, died in a fraternity hazing incident in 2008. The parents said that the name was insensitive and belittled a dangerous campus practice. Ben & Jerry's, which is owned by Unilever (UN), initially released the flavor in February 2014, reported Franchise Herald. The name is a reference to the phrase "dazed and confused," which is the name of a Led Zeppelin song and a 1993 coming-of-age move, according to Bloomberg. The ice cream contains chocolate and hazelnut, the latter being the source of the "hazed" part. Lianne and Brian Kowiak took notice in September and complained to the company. The website StopHazing.org urged its readers to send protests to Ben & Jerry's. The company said that it had only received a handful of comments, but would consider a name change in its October management meeting. Harrison Kowiak had a golf scholarship to Lenoir-Rhyne University. When a sophomore in 2008, he had pledged the Theta Chi fraternity, as the Tampa Bay Times reported. A lawsuit filed by the Kowiaks claimed that their 160-pound son and another boy had been put through a gauntlet line, where they were pushed, shoved, and tackled by fraternity members who weighed as much as 250 pounds and were on the school's football team.

At some point Kowiak could no longer stand. Instead of immediately calling 911, the lawsuit says, the fraternity brothers told him to get up and walk - which he did, until he collapsed. Finally, the brothers loaded him into one of their cars and drove them to Frye Regional Medical Center. Kowiak, the lawsuit says, suffered seizures along the way.

What’s this week’s big story for investors?

Candidate #1: RadioShack (NYSE: RSH) said it will close up to 1,100 of its nearly 5,200 US stores amid widening losses. The company also announced that revenue in the fourth quarter of 2013 fell 20 percent from year-earlier levels.

It doesn’t matter whether the latest announcement is in addition to or merely an expansion of the company’s Feb. 5 statement that it would close 500 stores. That, in turn, shortly followed the beleaguered company’s $4 million expenditure for a widely praised but clearly ill-timed 30-second ad during the Super Bowl.

Also this week, Radio Shack agreed to pay its top executives “retention” bonuses, saying their skills are critical to the company comeback plan. CEO Joe Magnacca will get a $500,000 payment, while other executives will receive $187,500 to $275,000.

The stock currently trades around $2, down from its 1999 peak of $61.

No, that’s not the week’s big story. But it was too good to ignore.

Candidate #2: The current bull market celebrates its fifth birthday this week, with the Standard & Poor’s 500 delivering a total return of about 175 percent during that time.

Since 1921, the median bull market has been 50 months long and has delivered 115 percent in price appreciation. So this market is older and better than most. Still, the conditions aren’t yet present to suggest the end is near. Indeed, Wednesday’s advance, the best of the year to date, was exceptional for both its breadth and heavy volume.

The five-year anniversary also means that stocks, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, closed-end funds and so on will boast very good five-year returns. Don’t be overly impressed. Reason: Almost everybody will be a winner. (Other than Radio Shack.) But you should dig deeper: Comparisons will be useful to sort out leaders and laggards for potential investme

    Lesson 1: Income is king.
A look at the four funds trading at the highest premiums to net asset value reveals a common thread: They're all focused on maximizing income. What's interesting, though, is that they use different methods to reach the same ends. Among the three PIMCO funds, PIMCO High Income (NYSE: PHK  ) looks largely to the high-yield bond market for its holdings, while PIMCO Corporate & Income Opportunities (NYSE: PTY  ) has a somewhat lower distribution rate but has a sizable allocation to investment-grade debt. The fund with the highest premium, PIMCO Global StocksPLUS, uses futures contracts to add stock exposure to its portfolio of income-producing bonds. Finally, BlackRock Virginia Municipal Bond rounds out the top four with its tax-free bond portfolio.

It's fun to be right, but that doesn't always mean it's fruitful. I was right about Westinghouse Solar Inc. (OTCMKTS:WEST) being a breakout candidate when I explained the chart's most likely technical outcome. Though it took a little more than a week for WEST to actually perform as expected, it got there. Problem: It got there in spades, solving one problem but creating another. Though I'm still bullish on this solar play, we need a new roadmap.
