Hot New Stocks To Own For 2014

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Tesla Motors (TSLA) reported better-than-expected quarterly results, but investor concerns about fourth-quarter deliveries sent shares sharply lower.

Palo Alto, Calif.-based Tesla reported earnings of 12 cents a share on $603 million in revenue, as the company delivered 5,500 Model S units during the quarter. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters were expecting Tesla to report earnings of 11 cents a share on $534.64 million in revenue.

Tesla said it expects to "deliver slightly under 6,000 Model S vehicles in Q4, which increases our total expected deliveries to 21,500 vehicles worldwide for 2013." Additionally, the company noted, "ASPs are expected to be relatively flat sequentially as we continue to see a rich mix of options on incoming orders. Model S gross margin may continue to make slight improvements over the next several quarters as we continue to drive down manufacturing costs. While we expect to achieve our target of 25% non-GAAP automotive gross margin in Q4 (assuming no contribution from ZEV credits), further progress is likely if customers continue to purchase our vehicles with a high option take rate." Shares were down 12.3% to $155.10 in after-hours trading, following the call. --Written by Chris Ciaccia in New York >Contact by Email. Follow @Chris_Ciaccia

Synthetic biology company and renewable oils manufacturer Solazyme (NASDAQ: SZYM  ) reported earnings after the market closed on Wednesday. Investors worried about a quiet start to the year were reminded that the company remains occupied preparing its three commercial-scale facilities for operations and developing oil profiles. The waiting game isn't quite over for investors, but management announced one major event that should keep investors happy. Here is a recap of recent developments at Solazyme.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

ADM has sought to grow by reaching out to industry peers. It allowed Solazyme (NASDAQ: SZYM  ) to use an Iowa plant to produce its renewable algal oils, which helped Solazyme boost its overall production to achieve commercial-scale levels. Meanwhile, ADM's ongoing attempt to buy the remaining 80% of Australia's GrainCorp that it doesn't already own has met with resistance, as the Australian exporter has so far rebuffed a sweetened bid for the company. Whether those moves will pay off for ADM in the long run remains to be seen.

Synthetic biology and renewable oils manufacturerSolazyme (NASDAQ: SZYM  ) announced that it successfully conducted multiple initial fermentations in 500,000 liter fermentors in December 2012. While it was a big step forward in the right direction, I think the announcement was a bit premature. By "multiple," the company meant two and by "commercial scale production metrics," the company meant that only partial data had been collected. By reading SEC filings, investors can learn that the company has yet to prove microbial productivity at volumes greater than 128,000 liters. Not at all a nail in the coffin, but since the company believes it needs to reach 625,000 liter fermentors to be profitable, it is clear that engineers have plenty of work ahead of them.

Truth be told, had MagneGas Corporation (NASDAQ:MNGA) shares not surged 400% - and subsequently tumbled - in early January, it might not even be worth looking at now. MNGA did surge then, however, so what we've seen unfurl over the past few days can't be ignored now... as it suggests this small hydrogen supplier stock is about to take flight in a more controlled and longer-lasting way than it did at the beginning of the year.

SolarCity (NASDAQ: SCTY  ) has been one of the most successful IPOs of the year. Maybe it's an overvalued and risky stock -- high-flying IPOs can be recipes for disaster -- but one thing's for sure: There are reasons that investors are excited about its growth potential. Solar installations are its core business, and the signals are bullish. Last year, California alone booked a 26% increase in solar installations. Overall, solar installations in this year's first quarter increased by 33% -- not surprisingly led by California -- with increasing growth attributed to residential and business adoption.
