Hot Shipping Stocks To Own Right Now

The holiday shopping marathon that began at the start of November and will end in less than a week has become a sprint. As retailers face having only days to improve their sales results, they have turned to a part of their playbook that did not even exist a few years ago — free shipping. The tactic is particularly critical to e-commerce business. Put simply — people cannot buy what they cannot get their hands on.

Like most retailers with an online presence, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) has several levels of free shipping and has decided to pressure customers with the message that the chances to use the service are about to come to an end. Orders from Walmart.comof $35 or more can still ship freevia standard delivery, which takes as much as five days. Tardy shoppers have to pay a premium to get “rush shipping” until December 22. The price for the privilege is high enough that Walmart does not post it. As the retailer says, “prices vary per item.”

I always find it very interesting to see what long-term investors are selling in a given quarter. Kahn Brothers lightened up on many financials that have shot up and now trade above book value. The firm sold out of Flushing Financial (FFIC), TCF Financial (TCB) and Dime Community Bank (DCOM). Khan apparently shares my views on the large-cap drug stocks, easing up on both Pfizer (PFE) and Bristol Meyers (BMY) over the summer. Khan Brothers also sold the last of the Travelers shares (TRV) it has owned since 2008 at more than twice the purchase price.

The Fund investment advisor is First Trust Advisors L.P. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Selena Maranjian]

Perhaps the best reason to pass up this otherwise solid ETF is its market-cap-based weighting, which gives much more influence to some companies than others. If you're not a strong believer in Apple's future, for example, you may not want more than 13% of your money in this ETF tied up in it. If you agree that equal weighting makes more sense in indexes, consider the First Trust NASDAQ-100 Equal Weighted ETF (NASDAQ: QQEW  ) , an ETF with the same stock focus as the PowerShares ETF that's also compelling in terms of fees and performance. It charges a bit more in fees, but it will give all its holdings an equal shot at boosting the value of the index.
