Best Shipping Stocks To Own For 2014

Pfizer (NYSE: PFE  ) is battling cheap knockoffs of its erectile dysfunction drug Viagra. But these aren't the typical generic drugs offered for pennies on the dollar. Viagra is still under patent in the U.S., so generic drugs aren't available yet.

Instead, Pfizer is fighting against counterfeit medications, often sold on the Internet, which may not even contain the active drug. To battle back, the pharma is entering their realm, selling Viagra direct to consumers through its website. Pfizer won't fill the orders directly; they'll go through CVS Caremark's (NYSE: CVS  ) mail-order pharmacy, which will presumably get a cut of the sales.

Patients will still need a prescription, so it isn't particularly more convenient than going to the pharmacy. For bashful patients, though, at least the mailman won't know what's in the package, unlike the pharmacist at the counter.

Through Pfizer's website, standard shipping is free. But if you've got a hot date this weekend, you'll have to pay extra for expedited shipping.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Michael Fitzsimmons]

While ConocoPhillips is no longer a fully integrated company since its spin-off of Phillips 66 (PSX), it is hard not to compare the company's performance with its former peers Exxon and Chevron. Exxon posted a 57% decrease in Q2 earnings on lower production and a host of other issues. Chevron also missed by $0.19 in Q2 on lower oil prices, maintenance issues, and lower refining earnings. So the bullish report by COP, which also raised 2013 full year production guidance, was in stark contrast to its old friends. Also, it could be argued that PSX's Q2 refining, midstream, and chemicals performance was better than similar operations at Exxon and Chevron. But that is a more complicated and lengthy analysis and will be saved for another day. That said, in my opinion, the COP+PSX combination is outperforming both Exxon and Chevron.

The last three months were good for refiners like Phillips 66 (PSX), Western Refining (WNR) and Delek US (DK), which each gained more than 14% during that period.

    REUTERS

One of the drivers of that performance, maybe the biggest driver, has been the expectation that U.S. crude-oil prices would fall relative to Brent crude, the European benchmark, giving a boost to their profit margins.

That view is now the consensus, and Credit Suisse’s Edward Westlake and Rakesh Advani worry that it might be priced into the stocks at this point. They cut Delek US, Western Refining andPhillips 66 to Market Perform from Outperform today on signs that oil prices could be stronger than the market expects:

Given upcoming refining maintenance in the Gulf (Feb/March), investors appear to be positioned for the same collapse in LLS prices vs Brent that took place during last Fall refining maintenance season i.e. long refining/short domestic E&P. However, much has changed since last Fall. (1) Overall refining runs in the [Petroleum Administration for Defense Districts] 1,2,3,4 ast of Rockiesregion are higher. (2) Inventories of crude are lower. (3) Crude imports have fallen. (4) Maintenance is likely to be down yoy and flat with last Fall. (5) We may have a temporarily slower trajectory of domestic production growth due to the normal winter impacts.

Delek US,Western Refining andPhillips 66 are most exposed to the consensus thinking Westlake andAdvani say. They kept Tesoro (TSO) and Northern Tier Energy (NTI) rated outperform.

Shares of Delek have dropped 1.5% to $29.45 at 3:25 p.m., while Western Refining has dipped 0.2% to $38.64, Tesoro has fallen 0.3% to $50.74, Northern Tier Energy has declined 1.3% to $24.84 and Phillips 66 is little changed at $74.91.

When I shed USANA Health Sciences, Inc. (NYSE:USNA) from my hypothetical portfolio yesterday, I wasn't necessary in a hurry to replace it with a different pick. But, that doesn't mean I wouldn't fill in the slot that USNA left behind with another idea if the right opportunity came along. Well, the right opportunity came along. I'm adding Denbury Resources Inc. (NYSE:DNR) to my position list, at the same 5% allocation that USANA Health Sciences had.

And dry bulk shippers like FreeSeas Inc. (Nasdaq: FREE), Seanergy Maritime Holdings Corp. (Nasdaq: SHIP), and Eagle Bulk Shipping Inc. (Nasdaq: EGLE) are noting big gains today as shipping rates strengthen. Another stock that looks poised to trigger a near-term breakout trade is Seanergy Maritime (SHIP), which provides transportation solutions in the dry bulk shipping sector through its vessel-owning subsidiaries for a range of dry bulk cargoes, including coal, iron ore, and grains, bauxite, phosphate and steel products. This stock has been red hot so far in 2013, with shares up a whopping 63%.

If you take a look at the chart for Seanergy Maritime, you'll notice that this stock has just started to spike back above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages with above-average volume. In fact, volume for SHIP over the last few weeks has been showing bullish flows as the stock has flirted with those key moving averages. This move is quickly pushing shares of SHIP within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in SHIP if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $1.74 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action 12,297 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then SHIP will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $2.06 to $2.09 a share. Any high-volume move above those levels will then put $2.19 to its 52-week high at $2.71 into range for shares of SHIP.

Traders can look to buy SHIP off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day at $1.44 a share. One could also buy SHIP off strength once it takes out $1.74 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Advisors' Opinion:

First Energy (NYSE: FE  ) may not be. Record drought and extreme heat in the Midwest in 2012 forced the company to slow production at its Perry nuclear plant -- water is necessary to cool nuclear plants, and water levels were at historic lows because of the drought. First Energy isn't alone. Two reactors at Dominion Resources' (NYSE: D  ) Millstone Power Station in Connecticut were forced to shut down last August, when the temperatures in Long Island Sound were too hot to cool the facility. Exelon's (NYSE: EXC  ) Braidwood Generating Station, a nuclear plant near Chicago, received permission from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission last July to operate after temperatures in its cooling pond increased above the plant's 100-degree permit.

In this series, we examine several companies in a single industry to determine their ROIC. Let's take a look at Exelon (NYSE: EXC  ) and three of its industry peers to see how efficiently they use cash.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

At the other end of the spectrum, many companies focus less on traditional regulated-utility business and have emphasized power generation and wholesale distribution instead. For instance, Exelon (NYSE: EXC  ) is a major producer of energy that gets used throughout the country, and its purchase of Constellation helped bolster its presence in the deregulated energy market. For power wholesalers, growth prospects are somewhat greater, but immense competition has nevertheless kept the reins on most of the major producers in the industry.
