Top Building Product Companies For 2014

It takes money to make money. Most investors know that, but with business media so focused on the "how much," very few investors bother to ask, "How fast?"

When judging a company's prospects, how quickly it turns cash outflows into cash inflows can be just as important as how much profit it's booking in the accounting fantasy world we call "earnings." This is one of the first metrics I check when I'm hunting for the market's best stocks. Today, we'll see how it applies to Quanex Building Products (NYSE: NX  ) .

Let's break this down
In this series, we measure how swiftly a company turns cash into goods or services and back into cash. We'll use a quick, relatively foolproof tool known as the cash conversion cycle, or CCC for short.

Why does the CCC matter? The less time it takes a firm to convert outgoing cash into incoming cash, the more powerful and flexible its profit engine is. The less money tied up in inventory and accounts receivable, the more available to grow the company, pay investors, or both.

Top 10 Services Stocks To Watch For 2015: Rosetta Resources Inc.(ROSE)

Rosetta Resources Inc., an independent exploration and production company, engages in the acquisition, exploration, development, and production of onshore oil and gas resources in the United States. It owns producing and non-producing oil and gas properties located primarily in South Texas, including the Eagle Ford, and in the Southern Alberta Basin in Northwest Montana. As of December 31, 2011, the company had an estimated 965 billion cubic feet equivalent of proved reserves, including 36,370 million barrels of oil, 50,219 million barrels of natural gas liquids, and 446 billion cubic feet of natural gas, as well as drilled 53 net wells. Rosetta Resources Inc. was incorporated in 2005 and is headquartered in Houston, Texas.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Value Digger]

It is clear that these key metrics match the metrics of a heavily natural gas weighted company that also carries significant debt. To prove this, let's check out Comstock Resources (CRK). Comstock sold some assets recently to Rosetta Resources (ROSE) to reduce its long term debt which still remains high though.

  • [By Tyler Crowe]

    Who's doing it the best?
It can be pretty handy to evaluate the entire industry on how efficiently it's replacing reserves, but reserve replacement costs can be more effective in evaluating individual companies. The lower the costs, the better it is. According to Ernst & Young, the most effective company at controlling reserve replacement costs is private companyAntero Resources, with a three-year average reserve replacement cost of about $2.88 per barrel of oil equivalent. Antero, and four of the other top five companies on Ernst & Young's list, are almost pure natural gas plays. If we've learned one thing over the past couple of years, it's that oil reserves and natural gas reserves are two totally different things when it comes to value. The five following companies have more than 50% liquids ontheirreserves and had the lowest reserve replacement costs for 2012.

    Company % Liquids inPortfolio Oil Production Replacement Rate (3 Years) Reserve Replacement Costs (3-Year Average) Per boe Rosetta Resources (NASDAQ: ROSE  ) 57% 846% $6.99 Continental Resources (NYSE: CLR  ) 72% 827% $12.61 Laredo Petroleum (NYSE: LPI  ) 52% 1,042% $13.51 SM Energy (NYSE: SM  ) 53% 392% $14.67 SandRidge Energy (NYSE: SD  ) 58% 704% $14.85

il and gas exploration and production company Rosetta Resources, Inc. (ROSE) rose in anticipation of an ease in regulations on the exportation of condensate, an ultra-light oil that undergoes minimal processing. This could allow the condensate to be exported at higher prices, alleviating a potential condensate glut in the U.S. and benefitting Rosetta.

Besides, as I also mentioned a few weeks ago, thanks to its recent Star Wars video-game deal withElectronic Arts, w (NASDAQ: EA  ) e already know Disney isn't new to the licensing game.

  • [By Adrian Covert]

One of the best implementations is the fact that Electronic Arts (EA) created a custom control scheme for "Battlefield 4" when you're using the PS Vita, ensuring you have access to all the game's functions. It's a small detail for a niche group of PS4 owners, but it's one that makes the feature all the more appealing.

Advisors' Opinion:

    Don't forget about...
Gevo may be a promising renewable fuel partner for Uncle Sam, but it isn't the only one. Solazyme (NASDAQ: SZYM  ) began extensive testing on three of its fuels -- two renewable diesels and one renewable jet fuel -- with the U.S. Navy in 2009. The company supplied 600,000 gallons of fuels between 2011 and 2012 under various programs. Similarly, Amyris (NASDAQ: AMRS  ) is working with DARPA under The Living Foundries program to build a quickly scalable industrial biotechnology platform. While it could one day be used for fuels or chemicals, vaccines or nutritionals, such a breakthrough would certainly catch the eye of the petroleum-guzzling DoD. Outside of the project, the company is working toward supplying commercial quantities of renewable jet fuel with partner Total by 2014 and already supplies renewable diesel in Brazil.

Good news for deep-sea sharks: Synthetic biology pioneer Amyris (NASDAQ: AMRS  ) has engineered yeast to create the hydrocarbon farnesene, which can then be processed into large amounts of high-quality squalane. The emollient is naturally produced by your skin to prevent moisture loss; thus, it's an important ingredient for numerous global cosmetic brands offering skincare lotions, hair care creams, hand washes, lipsticks, and various other personal-care products. In fact, you may have used a product containing squalane today. SeveralAvon (NYSE: AVP  ) products, the St. Ives brand from Unilever (NYSE: UN  ) , the Cover Girl and Olay brands from Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG  ) , the Nivea brand from Beiersdorf, the Dial brand from Henkel, the Aveeno and Johnsons brands from Johnson & Johnson, and many others list squalane as an ingredient.

Solazyme is more than a biofuels play like fellow biofuels upstarts like Amyris (NASDAQ: AMRS  ) and Gevo (NASDAQ: GEVO  ) . I purchased shares of Solazyme for the Prosocial Portfolio (I hold shares in my personal portfolio, too) not only for its impressive foray into a nascent field, but also because it had already inked some impressive partnerships. Meanwhile, its alternative oils go much further than simply trying to provide alternatives to fossil fuels. Its microalgae-derived oils can also be used in skin care and food.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

But one reason why trucking stocks have done so well is that investors are starting to see the potential for consolidation in the industry. Long-beleaguered YRC Worldwide (NASDAQ: YRCW  ) apparently made an offer to buy out peer Arkansas Best (NASDAQ: ABFS  ) in May, and although Arkansas Best rebuffed the bid, it still points to the efficiency gains that smaller trucking and logistics companies could gain from combining forces.

  • [By Sean Williams]

    Whom it competes against
In addition to competing against other trucking companies, perhaps nothing stands as more of a brick wall than labor costs. The inability for Arkansas Best (NASDAQ: ABFS  ) to strike a collective bargaining agreement between its ABF Freight Systems subsidiary and the teamsters union nearly resulted in the company laying off 15%-20% of its workforce just to keep its costs competitive with its peers. You can literally see how important having competitive labor costs can be by the doubling in Arkansas Best's share price since the collective bargaining deal was announced.

  • [By Sean Williams]

    This week's winner
After tumbling by double digits last week, trucking company Arkansas Best (NASDAQ: ABFS  ) tacked on 14.6% to take the top spot this week. Shares rallied after the company announced a regular $0.03 quarterly cash dividend on Tuesday, payable to shareholders on May 21. Following stronger-than-expected results from many trucking companies, I feel quite confident that once Arkansas Best solves its union issues, it'll be pedal to the metal.

  • [By Sean Williams]

    This week's winner
The top dog this week was, again, the star of this deeply discounted value portfolio, Arkansas Best (NASDAQ: ABFS  ) . The trucking company soared 18% on the week after announcing that its ABF teamsters had ratified a five-year collective bargaining agreement, and passed a majority of supplements in the ABF National Master Freight Agreement. This news paves the way for Arkansas Best to, once again, be cost-competitive with its peers without having to reduce its workforce. Shares have now more than doubled in just the past two months.
